Visual Discrimination

Visual discrimination relates to the ability to determine exact characteristics and distinguish similarities and differences in letters, words, objects and pictures, etc. In reading, this skill helps children distinguish between similarly spelled words, such as ‘then/when’, ‘run/ran’ or ‘on/one’. The above words vary only in the appearance of the beginning, ending and middle of the words respectively. A child with poor visual discrimination will not be able to detect this slight visual difference.
